Baby Shower at Glazed Expressions

AJ put together the sweetest surprise baby shower for me and Nathan! He was even behind getting my mom to visit from Tennessee for this weekend! How amazing of a best friend is he?

Baby Shower at Glazed Expressions

It was held at a local paint-your-own-pottery shop (Hello, I think I need to open one of these – they were so busy!) and was so different and fun! AJ’s mom and sister Katie who are basically family came up for the weekend, too and we all had a relaxing time painting, eating fruit, bagels, and drinking mimosas (or in my case pomegranate lemonade)! AJ is such an amazing event planner, and an even better surprise keeper when he wants to be. I really had no idea that he was behind all of this!

We played a few fun party games (which I secretly love). One everyone had to choose which features they thought Nathan or I believed the baby would have ie. eyes, hair, smile, green thumb. Then AJ matched up their answers with each of our answers. Nathan I had the same answers for all but 5 of the characteristics. Baby girl is expected to come out with his eyes, my nose, my legs, his smile, my hair, his wit, my humor, his charm and a good mix of our intelligence and green thumb! Well, we shall see soon enough.

Everyone chose a piece of pottery to paint, and away we went with our creative brush strokes. I’ve really been wanting a piggy bank for baby girl, and decided to paint one for her in a nice speckly green color with pink dots. Nathan made an adorable tile for her that will eventually go in our kitchen back splash some day. I was really emotional throughout the day, and his tile seriously made me cry! As did the generosity and love from my family and friends. Amazing people left and right.

Manic Monday

Oooh today was wild! The blizzard is coming the blizzard is coming!
That’s what everyone is saying at least. My mom had a flight back to Tennessee tomorrow morning at 8 am, but Southwest has plans to shut down everything tomorrow causing up to 4-5 day delays for people travelling. AJ was kind enough to switch my mom’s flight to this evening, but there is no one to pick her up in Nashville! So of course there was a lot of drama when I came home to take her to the airport. I tried to get a rental car for her, a shuttle, my brother to borrow a car but none of these options worked within our budget. There was a possibility that she might have to stay overnight at the Nashville airport, but finally a friend of hers came through for her. And, she should be home this evening.

We didn’t get to cut her hair or make a spice cake, but it was fun quick weekend trip. I know she is rather emotional about everything because the next time she sees me I will “have the baby.” She cries about this, but I told her to smile instead. On the way to the airport this afternoon she was telling me about the first time she had to stay overnight in an airport with two babies (me and my brother)! By the end of the story we were both laughing and crying so hard I had to pull over on to the side of the road to put myself back together.

So it does look like a blizzard is coming. Nothing too crazy until tomorrow afternoon, but the wind today was outrageous! It was so cold! Walking back from lunch with AJ, Katie, and Sienna, Katie yells, “You can’t have a baby in this &^%C&(^ city!” She was pushing Sienna and the stroller was nearly getting blown away.

This weekend went by so quick probably because it was jam packed with all kinds of fun things!
Friday I got my mom, and I was so tired we ended up getting Subway and I crashed early.
Saturday Nathan made breakfast – his world famous pancakes and bacon – and then Mama and I went to finally get my eyes checked, and get glasses. I have read that you shouldn’t do this while you are pregnant, but honestly if I don’t get them now (it’s been over 3 years since the last time I got glasses!!) I don’t know if I will ever get them. The doc said my eyes are in great health, and don’t seem to have changed at all during the pregnancy. If they do afterwards I can always get my prescription altered. I found 3 pairs I liked but could only have two so I might end up getting another pair from one of those sites that offer cheap frames. Why do I need 3 different glasses you might wonder? Well, I don’t wear jewelry much or contacts so why not have lots of glasses to choose from!
Saturday night we went to Stephen and Logan’s for a delicious italian dinner featuring spinach manicotti! It was a fun time hanging out with AJ, Katie, Maureen (AJ’s mom and sis were in town this weekend, too!), Stephen, Logan, Nathan and my mom! I couldn’t believe that Nathan and Katie had never met! Everyone hit it off, though!
Then Sunday I was surprised with a really cool and relaxing baby shower thrown by AJ at Glazed Expressions! I had never painted pottery before at a shop like this and it was a great way to celebrate! I’m seriously still beaming from spending time with everyone, and feeling so much love from our family and friends. AJ really outdid himself.

Okay before this post gets any longer I’m off to upload pictures, snuggle with Tuck and sip tea. Pictures soon!

32/40 weeks

My mom is in town this weekend for a quick surprise visit! It’s fun to have her see me this far along, and get to watch baby lady dancing about in my tummy. And, she just made me one of my favorite things ever – a cheese sandwich with lettuce, mayo, and pepper. YUM. There is nothing as good as a sandwich from your mom.

I have been feeling really overwhelmed lately. There just seems to be so much going on up until our baby arrives, and while I’ve attempted to make lists and breathe deeply about it all it’s still a lot to handle! Every weekend is packed with something which is fun in a sense, but I am really awful about having “plans.” I just like to go with the flow, and spend my down time relaxing. Yesterday I came home from work a mess. I literally threw a fit worthy of a two-year-old! I gotta tell you it was not pretty. A nap helped especially since I have been sleeping so off and on lately.

32/40 weeks

Other than all the obligations I either have or have imagined I am feeling so excited about meeting this little lady. By the time she is here asparagus will be in season! I know that sounds crazy to say, but it just makes me so excited that she is coming this spring. One of my favorite things about life are the seasons, and spring. I love listening to the snow and ice melt away in to puddles, the birds chirping for food, the hundreds of Robin’s that live in our neighborhood jumping around for worms, and all the nests filled with baby eggs soon to be birdies.

I cannot wait for our birth class. It’s in just a few weeks (I fear we are going to be the farthest along in our pregnancy but oh well), and I am looking forward to any information they have to share. I’ve also been trying to focus on deep breathing through my diaphragm both for labor prep, but also because little miss lady is taking my breath away just about every day.

32/40 weeks

It’s taken a while to really start to look pregnant (strangers are starting to comment and ask me when I’m due which is exciting), and I have to say that I am loving this baby belly.

Sisi

I got to meet my niece Sienna today!! She is such an awesome, zen-like baby. Didn’t care an ounce that some strange lady was holding her all through lunch!

Me and Sienna

I haven’t held a baby in over two years! It was so much fun, and I get to snuggle her more tomorrow.

love.

This is me watching Nathan kayak somewhere in Tampa Bay.

I watch him often. I’ll look over as we drive to work or nuzzle closer to see his chest rise and fall as we sleep or as he is thinking of his next master idea and planning the next endeavor (I love watching him think especially) and sometimes I just stare in his big brown eyes and I wonder how it is possible to love someone so much. When we first met, day 2, we walked hand in hand down every sidewalk in this city. We must have covered a hundred miles on that hot day in August and the whole time I looked up at him. I didn’t care if I tripped over my own feet or ran in to a stranger I couldn’t take my eyes away.

He is an amazing strong and patient man who loves me in all the ways I have ever dreamt of being loved (and many I never knew I deserved). People always say that you have no idea what love is until you have a baby. I had no idea what love is until I met Nathan. And, now together we are growing a baby. A baby who will laugh and cry and love and have passions and ideas and curiosities we can only begin to imagine. But I think every time I see our baby I will realize a powerful love because it all began with him. With us.

I love you husband.

ta da

I’m eating sweet potatoes again with dinner – this time in the form of baked fries. Yum.
Today was fun, and I felt good. I’ve been struggling this week what with the tension headache I had for 3 days, and irregular sleep (I’ve been waking up every two hours) so I haven’t put much effort in to my appearance. My hair is long enough now that I can put it in a pony tail any time I want, and I have been doing that a lot! By the end of my work day I look ragged! Pregnancy glow schmo.

So yesterday I came home and decided to play with my wardrobe. I found my old jean jacket that I haven’t worn in years, and decided it wasn’t out of style anymore. Then I put on a dress I’ve never worn and decided I didn’t hate it as much as I used to. And, all of a sudden I felt like I had stepped back to the 1990s, but I loved it. Joon from Benny and Joon popped in my head, and I went off to cut some bangs like hers! Well, and because AJ said that they would look good on me.

Snip, trim, cut. A little later I was feeling like a new lady. I even curled my lashes and threw on some mascara.

blue skies again

This winter hasn’t been so bad in Chicago (I know the rest of the country is feeling it, though). Now I know it’s no where near over, but Chicago skies are usually grey blankets laying low over this city for months. Lately though I’ve woken to a beautiful snow falling from the grey sky only to see it disappear in a few hours and become sunshine and blue! Nothing makes me happier than sunshine.

cozy weekend

cozy weekend

This Sunday the plastic sheet to keep the drafts out of our back window somehow broke. I blame it on the cat who is addicted to licking plastic. So Nathan and I pulled the blinds up, and sat in the sun pouring through. We sat there for ten minutes at least watching this little squirrel scavenge for a piece of toast from our neighbor’s trash, and attempt to eat it all! (PS. last Friday was officially Squirrel Day).

So adorable!
Oh, and here is proof that my cat has an oral fixation. She likes to lick string, too and then scratch her tongue. Weirdo.

pillowcase dress

Confession: I’m really beginning to enjoy sewing!
I guess all you need is a little patience and practice after all.

And, I made a dress for baby girl!

baby pillowcase dress

I used the tutorial for a pillowcase dress on Prudent Baby, and it was really as easy as it looks! I’m just so excited that I finished it in one day without pulling my hair out. :)

I can’t wait to try another one. I need to work on my stitching (I have no idea how to serge, or if my machine even does that), and try a few other fabrics!

sweet as pie

I’ve had a tension headache since yesterday, stepped on a sharp piece of wood, and had a nosebleed this morning.
Oh boy Monday.

But I’m getting through it by thinking about pies! Yes, pies! I want to bake pies for Valentine’s day. We don’t celebrate Valentine’s day exactly, but I thought it would be fun to have a pie party! I threw it out to a couple of people, but I don’t know if they were in to it as much as I am! Pregnant women and pie…hello! So Nathan and I are each going to bake a pie, percolate some coffee, and enjoy all things sweet.

Now for the tough part… what kind of pie do I bake?

Grandma Friendship’s Raisin Pie?

Run for the Roses Pie?

Shaker Lemon Pie?

Honey Pie?

Mud pie?

I would have suggested a fruit pie but I love those in the spring and summer when berries are fresh and tart! Do you have any favorite pie recipes I should try?

(and 5 days)…

31 weeks and 5 days

We are trucking along, and as Nathan wrote on our dry erase board…”You’re due in 8 weeks!”
Just about. As of today we have 58 days to go! I am finally starting to wish for time to slow down. It’s been a lovely week though… baby girl is growing and moving and we are getting more prepared for her arrival every day. I just loved finding out how she was positioned at our last appointment, and now watch my belly move with a new understanding of what’s going on in there.

31 weeks and 5 days

My favorite time is waking up on the weekends when I can lay in bed for a bit. She is always awake then, and I just lay there with my hand on her back. Nathan has been so cute and excited about it all. I cannot even count how many times he has said how amazing it is that I am carrying our child. He is going to make a wonderful daddy.

Random little things from this week.
- obsessed with sweet potatoes
- loving some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches too
- having lots of “grown up” conversations about vaccinations and parenting
- energy plummeting faster throughout the day
- trying to drink more water than I ever have
